The Things I'm Currently Reading

I consider reading to be a hobby and part of my job as a(n aspiring) writer.  I thoroughly enjoy it.  I wanted to share a list of things that I'm reading currently or read on a regular basis.

  • Iowa Girl Eats.  I absolutely LOVE Iowa Girl Eats.  I'm an Iowa girl, and I eat.  She's also adorable, makes amazing recipes (see my adapted Chicken and Noodles!), and is pretty darn funny.  If you haven't read this before, I definitely recommend checking out her blog and/or following her on Pinterest.
  • Various news sources. If you get all of your information from one site (especially if that one site is Facebook), you're misinformed.  I read a handful daily, from local to national sources.
  • BuzzFeed has articles that range from silly to serious.  It is actually pinned to my favorites bar.  When I need fluffy kitties to feel better.  BuzzFeed.  Food Porn? Check. Learn about the plight of Kate Hunt (FreeKate.org. Really, really, really fucked up situation for this girl)? Check.
  • GoodReads.com.  I have a love/hate relationship with GoodReads. It allows me to keep track of my books/to-reads, it allows me to compare books with friends, and it has some really good recommendations.  However, it's become a weird teenage hangout.  If you enter a book as "read" it automatically puts that book's discussion boards into your feed.  Yeah, I read The Host.  And it was fucking awful. If I could un-read a book, that would be it.  Yet, I get a shit ton of "word games starting with TWIIILIIIGHT!!" or "Who would you rather: Bilbo or Frodo?".  Sorry, I thought that these boards were a site for discussion about the book, not about how fucking childish we all are.

Another thing that really annoys me is that really bad books are getting really good reviews, as the people who post things like those above give everything five stars.    Also the 5-star rating really sucks.  It should be a 10 star rating, or at least have half stars.  There are some things that I liked more than 3,but less than 4.  Also, you should be able to give something zero stars.
(PS - if you haven't 'friended' me on GoodReads, do it now!  Here!)
  • Twitter is a great resource for up to the minute news.  It's also ridiculous.  Follow me @D_zzyMissLizzy!!
  • Word War Z.  Yes, in addition to all of these websites, I do actually read books.  Go fig.  So, I won a copy of World War Z from the DSM Public Library for sharing what I was currently reading on Twitter. ( I think I was reading Gone Girl at the time.  Which I SO recommend.  Insanely good, and just kind of insane. I loved it)  I have a thing for owning all of the books that I read.  Also, for reading all of the books before I see the movie.  Which comes out this month, and is starring Brad Pitt (yum!).

So, far... Eh.  I don't know.  I'm a fan of character driven books, usually.  I'm not very far in right now, but it's all first hand accounts.  Don't get me wrong, it's good.  It's just not what I had expected since so many people called it "terrifying".  Maybe I'm not there yet...
  • Various magazines.  I had a subscription to Real Simple, but cancelled because they ran an article about "Real Women" wearing "Real Clothes".  But among these "real" clothes was a plain white button-down for $600.  I felt they were too out of touch with reality, so I cancelled it.

Everyday Food was my favorite little magazine.  It was a 10 issue subscription from the Martha Stewart camp.  It was amazing.  Only food.  I use the past tense, because its last issue was in January 2013.  The remaining time of my subscription is being filled by Martha Stewart Living.  And I don't care for it.  I don't care about how Martha cares for her alpacas.
  • apartment therapy.  While I don't read it often, it's a marathon when I do.  Seriously great inspiration.  Also, great links to other sites.
  • Tumblr.  I'm an avid follower of Unfuck Your Habitat, Adulting, and a few others.
Welp, that's not ALL, but it's a good slice of what I read daily/weekly.  Any recommendations?
